Older versions of VMware ESXi and VMware Server may require that the virtual NICs be manually set to promiscuous mode.  Depending on the VMware product, accomplishing this may require adding an entry to a VMware configuration file or finding the right configuration option in the configuration menus.

If the VMware NIC cannot accept traffic for the emulated MAC address, treat it like a wireless NIC. Npcap should still be tried first with direct attachment. For MsiPcap, MsiPcap TAP Bridging can solve host-local forwarding, but a TAP adapter does not bypass filtering imposed by the upstream hypervisor virtual switch. Enable the hypervisor's applicable promiscuous-mode, forged-transmit, or MAC-spoofing settings as well. All the caveats in Networking with Wireless Ethernet apply.
