OpenVMS V6.0 through V8.3 support a maximum disk size of 1TB. OpenVMS V8.4 introduced a maximum disk size of 2TB. These guest limits apply whether Avanti backs the emulated SCSI disk with an image file or a host physical disk. A host physical-disk path can impose additional limits. The note in Section 1.1 of VSI's I/O User's Reference Manual explains the V8.4 change to unsigned block numbers and counts, and the need for applications to handle volumes and files larger than 1TB correctly.
Caveats:
The following pre-V7.2 notes are retained as historical operating-system and hardware guidance. They were not boundary-tested by the Avanti 5.1.0 storage validation and are not separate limits imposed by Avanti. Confirm them in documentation for the exact OpenVMS release and storage hardware before planning a migration.
•Pre-V7.2 versions do not support a system disk larger than 32GB.
•Pre-V7.2 versions have a maximum of 1 million clusters, so for an n-GB drive the cluster size will be 2*n, which may get rather large.
